It’s Where the Heart Is

When this post goes live, I will be somewhere between continents. I can’t say I’ve particularly missed my home in New York while on this voyage. Something about this return, however, is especially symbolic for me.

After being away two months, this return represents a chance to reset and refresh my New York life. It’s quiet surprising how much travel really did change my outlook. I am returning to New York with a new found sense of self, and confidence that I never realized I was lacking to being with; reaffirmed love of my body; more friends than when I left; and filled with hope.

Home has been many places for me over the years, but none of them has been more challenging than New York. I, like most people, get the sense that the city never truly embraces you. It’s dirty, stressful, busy yet it’s also beautiful, fun, energetic. Despite its contradictions I’m going to embrace the sh** out of that city. I miss the sounds; the familiar faces; the endless energy that buzzes through the city; My amazing roommates who, despite our differences, add a bit of magic to my day. Although I will miss life in Asia, there really is no place like home, “It’s where the heart is” afterall.

Embrace Summer

At the risk of sounding cheesy or like some whacked out hippie, I’m going to give you some advice. Enjoy life; don’t just live. It’s so easy to get lost in the days, just getting by. You don’t know how much time you have, so why waste it? The best advice I found recently is that “everyone is going to judge you regardless of what you do, so do whatever you want anyway and fuck what everyone else thinks”. Explore, love, trust, smile, laugh. See all the colours around you, shine like the sun. Do what you want, what makes you happy, don’t play it safe. The best things are found outside your comfort zone. And if I’m honestly: in some ways, I think this is more of a reminder for myself…

Be Happy.

ReCreate New York - 2013

Let’s RE/CREATE New York

Many companies do something during the Holiday season, but few do it in as spectacular a fashion as digital agency CREATETHE GROUP. In lieu of sending their clients gifts or just a fun interactive card this year, they instead created a nonprofit division to give back in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. A planned annual charitable initiative, RE/CREATE New York is an auction of personal, one-of-a-kind items that have been donated by prominent members of the fashion and creative community. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to New York Cares.

Despite some of the snark that Fashion “giving back” has gotten in the press, RE/CREATE reads like a love letter to New York; filled with not only items for auction, the site also features personal quotes from contributors regarding their passion for New York and a Spotify playlist filled with songs that inspire them.

Did we mention the auctions? Check out some of our favorites below:
